Banu Çankaya
Associate Professor

Banu Çankaya Şahin completed her bachelor’s degree at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey in 1999.  She pursued her Ph.D. education at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, US, receiving her doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2007, after completing a one-year Pre-doctoral Clinical Psychology Internship at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY. She undertook her postdoctoral training at the Rochester Center for Mind-Body Research as a research fellow. She worked as an Assistant Professor at Koç University and at MEF University as of 2017.  Current research interests include socio-cultural factors related to coping and connectedness and prevention of suicidal behavior. Her clinical practice with young adults and adults is heavily influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy and provides corporate education in areas related to mindfulness, stress and crisis management.

Hilal Şen
Assistant Professor

Hilal H. Şen received her undergraduate degree from Middle East Technical University in 2008, her master and PhD degree from Koç University in 2010 and 2019, respectively. Her specialization area is developmental psychology. She enrolled in several national and international research projects throughout her graduate studies. Her research interests focus on children's moral and normative awareness development. She is also interested in peer interaction in these developmental domains. Her research questions include (but not limited to): When asked to follow a rule, how do children enforce norms? What are children's persuasive strategies? When violated a rule, do children collaborate in lying? What is the role of differences in social dominance in children's collaborative actions? Is sense of morality innate or learned?

H. Melis Yavuz-Müren
Assistant Professor

H. Melis Yavuz-Müren has received her B.A. degree in Psychology from Koc University in 2009 and received her M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Developmental Psychology in 2011 and 2015 respectively, from the same university. She completed each degree with high distinction and has received Koç University Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities Graduate Studies Excellence Award for her outstanding achievement in her Ph.D. studies. During her Ph.D. studies, she spent one year in Centre for Child and Family Studies in Leiden University, The Netherlands as a visiting research assistant. Upon completion of her Ph.D. studies, she worked as a Post-doctorate researcher in Koc University, Department of Psychology. Her main research areas include social and socio-cognitive development of children and child psychopathological problems. She is interested in the roles of parenting and child temperament in internalizing outcomes and the mechanisms related to the development of obesity in early childhood years. Her projects covered a wide range of populations such as typically developing children, children with autism, children with chronic orthopedic disability, children with obesity, and children reared in institutions.

Müjde Peker
Associate Professor

 
Müjde Peker completed her BA in 2003, and MA in 2005 from Boğaziçi University. She then went to the UK on a Leverhulme Trust Scholarship completing her Ph.D. degree at the University of Kent in 2010. She worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Kent before returning to Istanbul. She worked as an Assistant Professor at Işık University from 2011 to 2015, then joined MEF University in 2015 to help found and chair the new Department of Psychology. Dr Peker conducts lab-based experimental research on intergroup relations, political psychology, and existential psychology. She has published research on ingroup projection, social memory, self-society moral discrepancies and ideology-related processing biases.

Neslihan Turnalar-Çetinkaya
Specialist

Neslihan (Turnalar) Çetinkaya has graduated from the Psychology Department, Boğaziçi University in 2004 and then completed her master's degree in Industrial / Organizational Psychology at Koç University. After completing her graduate degree, she assumed different roles and responsibilities in various multinational companies. Areas of expertise are spreading to a wide range of functions such as organizational development, training and development, human resource practices, sales, brand management, communications and digital marketing. She is continuing her doctoral program in Organizational Behavior at Marmara University. Her main area of research is entrepreneurship psychology. She provides consultancy services to organizations at different scales and works at MEF University, Psychology department since 2019.

Demet Başar
Research Assistant
 
Demet Başar completed her bachelor’s degree at Middle East Technical University in 2015. After graduated, she worked in a special education and rehabilitation center in Ankara as a psychologist. In 2016, she started Social Psychology master program in Middle East Technical University, and earned her M.S degree in 2019. Her research areas include sexism, gender-based violence and intergroup relations. She works as a research assistant at MEF University Department of Psychology since 2017 September.

İlksen Bostancı

İlksen Bostancı was graduated from Political Science and International Relations program in 2016. She decided to be a psychologist and completed her psychology bachelor’s degree in 2019 in MEF University with high honors. Throughout the program, she has experienced different subfields of psychology and decided to proceed with clinical psychology. She has interests in third-wave therapy approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). She has been working as a teaching assistant at MEF University since October, 2019.

Tuna Çakar
Assistant Professor

Tuna Çakar graduated from Biological Sciences and Bioengineering Program of Sabancı University in 2004. He has worked on the 3-D modelling of proteins with perturbation technique in his undergraduate thesis project. He received his master's degree from Cognitive Science Program at Boğaziçi University in 2009. In his master thesis, he worked on the skin conductance and pulse rate methods in order to understand emotional processes of humans. Tuna Çakar obtained his Ph.D. from Cognitive Science Program at the Informatics Institute in Middle East Technical University in 2015. In his thesis, he has worked on the identity judgments and he performed several different models including mathematical, neurophysiological (EEG/ERP, optic brain imaging) and biometrics (Eye-tracker) in order to understand the decision-making processes at various levels. Dr. Çakar is currently working on the applied neuroscience field with sector-specific and academic projects. In February 2017, he joined MEF University.

Nazlı Işık Birçek

Nazlı Işık Birçek graduated as a high honour student from the Feyziye Mektepleri Foundation Işık University Department of Psychology (performance scholarship; ÖSYM). During her undergraduate studies, she worked as a student assistant at the university and took part in scientific researches. After completing her undergraduate, she completed her long term internships which were very valuable; Marmara Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department, FMV Işık Erenköy Kindergarten and Istanbul University Medical Faculty Child and Adolescent Oncology Department. She completed her master's degree with the Merit scholarship at Swansea University Abnormal and Clinical Psychology in the United Kingdom. Her master thesis was about the relationships between Internet addiction and personality. She is currently working as a psychotherapist in the Moodist psychiatry and neurology hospital.

Suzi Amado
Part-Time Instructor

Suzi Amado is a clinical psychologist (MSc, METU, 2012) and an expressive arts therapist (MA, CIIS, 2012). After completing her BA in Psychology in Koç University, she received her MA in Middle East Technical University in 2005. She worked in several settings in Istanbul and went to United States of America to do her second masters degree in expressive arts therapy. She completed her MA in California Institute of Integral Studies in 2012.  In her last year of study she worked at California Pacific Medical Center with cancer patients, organ transplant patients and intensive care patients. She came back to Istanbul and has been practicing in Istanbul. She sees clients, gives supervision, supports young therapist candidates, facilitates art therapy, mindfulness and emotional first aid workshops. She is the author of a book “Ruhuna Pansuman.” In the therapy process she uses expressive arts, guided imagery, sand play, mindfulness and narrative therapy. Her therapy approach is aligned with Carl Rogers and Brene Brown.

Nihan Kaya

Nihan Kaya is an author of ten books in Turkish. Seven of her books are fiction with psychological content and two are about the relationship between literature, aesthetic theory and psychology.  Her last book, a non-fiction, is on the theory of childhood and its relationship with creativity.
